Introduction

2 Corinthians 6:17,18

Therefore "Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.
"I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the LORD Almighty."

  • Clean and Unclean
    • The Old Testament had many items that could make a person unclean
    • Typifies the spiritual intake of a Christian
  • Meditate on the Word
  • Watch one's walk
  • Don't be defiled with the unclean things of this world
  • take...the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God

As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby 1 Peter 2:2

His Chosen People: Genesis 12: 1-3

  • Chosen for Himself
    • "For you are a holy people to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. (Deut 14:2)
  • A blessing to all peoples
    • God ... saying to Abraham, `And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.' (Acts 3:25)

Israel in Egypt

  • Ruled by an evil king
    • King of Egypt…a great monster Ezekiel 29:3
  • Slaves
    • So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves (Exodus 1:13-14)

Israel in Egypt…

  • Worshipped "other gods"
    • Put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt (Joshua 24:14)
  • A land of idols
    • Do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt (Ezekiel 20:7)
  • God's name was not in their thoughts
    • Exodus 3:13
  • Lived in a land whose king God was against
    • Speak, and say, Thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I am against you, O Pharaoh king of Egypt" (Exek 29:3)

Before salvation you were:

  • A chosen people
  • Did not know who God was
  • Did not know God
  • Worshipped idols
  • In bondage to sin
  • Separated from God
    • But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear (Is 59:2)

But God provides a way of salvation

  • I will bring you out from under the burdens' of the Egyptians
  • I will rescue you from their bondage
  • I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments
  • I will take you as My people, and I will be your God.

A believers are a chosen people

Do we "go down to Egypt"

Egypt typifies the world - if one goes down to Egypt a Christian can be ensnared by the wickedness of the world

  • Each of you, throw away the abominations which are before his eyes, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God. (Ezekiel 20:7)

BUT

  • I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people. Therefore "Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you." (2 Corinthians 6:17)

Do we lay ourselves open for Egypt?

Numbers 19:15

  • (NKJV) 'This is the law when a man dies in a tent: All who come into the tent and all who are in the tent shall be unclean seven days; and every open vessel, which has no cover fastened on it, is unclean.

The issue here is that an "open vessel" allows contaminants to enter. The vessel itself is not the issue – the contents when corrupted is an issue!

  • Do you have open vessels that can pollute you?

Open vessels which contaminate

  • None of these are bad in themselves, but can be polluted, which then corrupts you. For example, a TV on the end of a scope is a marvellous tool in surgery – but can be a conduit for every kind of evil into your living room. Others include:
    • Video/DVD/or film
    • Internet
    • Books/magazines
    • Friends
    • Work

In Practice 1

  • PUT OFF
    • "put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts" (Ephesians 4:22)
  • PUT ON
    • "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts" (Romans 13:14)

In Practice 2

2 Corinthians 6:17

  • 17 Therefore "Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you."
  • 18 "I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the LORD Almighty."
